Experience Afro-Mestizo Carnival in Veracruz, Mexico

February 9-14, 2018

6 days/5 nights

Experience Carnival in the Afro-mestizo town of Coyolillo, learn the history of black Mexicans in the region. Spend five days among African descendant communities in Veracruz, Mexico during Carnival; Latin America’s version of Mardi Gras. We’ll visit Coyolillo, known for its African influenced celebrations, and Yanga, the first freed community in the Americas. You will have direct access to communities often hidden from sight. Black Mexicans exist, and you'll be able to share with them the delight of the pre-Easter season as they re-enact rituals and dances inherited from their African ancestors. The trip will focus on providing a historical understanding of the contemporary realities faced by Afro-mestizo communities. The following itinerary is custom crafted; a result of over 100 hours of research. Did I mention that I'll be your personal photographer and deliver social media ready photos each step of the way? Yea, that part!
