Carnival in Veracruz

Experience​ ​Carnival​ ​in​ ​the​ ​Afro-mestizo​ ​town​ ​of​ ​Coyolillo,​ ​learn​ ​the​ ​history​ ​of​ ​black Mexicans​ ​in​ ​the​ ​region.​ ​Spend five days among African descendant communities in Veracruz, Mexico during Carnival; Latin America’s version of Mardis Gras. We’ll visit Coyolillo, known for its African influenced celebrations, and Yanga, the first freed community in the Americas. You will have direct access to communities often hidden from sight.

 

The trip will focus on providing a historical understanding of the contemporary realities faced by Afro-mestizo communities. The following itinerary is custom crafted; a result of over 100 hours of research. Did I mention that I'll be your personal photographer and deliver social media ready photos each step of the way? Yea, that part!

The Curated Itinerary

Day 1: Get Settled in Xalapa

Check into your traditionally decorated Mexican hotel, and enjoy dinner in Xalapa, home of the jalapeño.

Day 2: See the  Olmec Heads

Visit a nationally renowned museum, home to thousands of artifacts from Mexico's ancient civilizations, including the mysterious colossal Olmec heads which some believed to have African features.

Day 3: Day Trip to Coyolillo

Go off the beaten path to visit a community that traces its roots to Congolese forced to work plantations during Mexico's colonial period.

Day 4: Day Trip to Yanga

 

This town earned its freedom after an African prince led a revolt against the Mexican government. We'll get a glimpse of present day conditions.

Day 5: Breeze thru Veracruz

We'll spend time in this port city retracing the steps of black Mexicans and partying in the streets for Carnival.

Day 6: Depart

Kiss Mexico goodbye. But make sure to stock up on chocolate, tequila, and Carnival souvenirs!
